ITINERARY
Day 1: Irmaj Castle – A Step Back in Time
At 10:30 AM, we begin our moderate-level hike toward Irmaj Castle. The 13 km trail ascends about 500 meters and takes us through pristine landscapes. The castle, largely untouched and unexplored, is believed to date back to Illyrian times, and our local guide will share its fascinating history.
At the top, we’re rewarded with sweeping views of the valley and a unique experience: lunch prepared by a village chef named Skënder, brought to the castle on donkey-back. The meal features local recipes using fresh ingredients.
In the afternoon, we return to the village, where we meet locals and get a glimpse of traditional Albanian village life. We can witness age-old methods of cheese-making, fruit preservation (like compote and molasses), and even the production of homemade alcoholic beverages.
Dinner is served in a different village home and features steam-cooked goat or chicken, prepared using the traditional Albanian clay pot method, cooked slowly under pressure. We will also spend the night in the village, staying in the homes of local families — offering you a genuine glimpse into the everyday life of this region.
Day 2: Sotira Waterfalls – A Journey Through Nature
At 9:00 AM, we head toward Sotira Village, traveling by 4x4 vehicles or local minibuses. The picturesque route takes about 1.5 hours, winding through lavender fields and alongside the Devoll River.
Upon arrival, we begin a 5 km hike to Sotira Waterfalls, a mostly flat trail that takes about an hour. The stunning waterfall greets visitors with its powerful sound and refreshing mist. The best time to visit is March to July, though August remains a good alternative.
Lunch is served next to the waterfall at a charming traditional restaurant, featuring homemade Albanian specialties. After a relaxing afternoon in nature, we return to Gramsh and rest in cozy, budget-friendly accommodations.
Day 3: Kabashi Cave & Holta Canyon
On our final day, we visit one of Albania’s most spectacular and mysterious natural landmarks — Kabashi Cave, located 28 km from Gramsh near the village of Kabash.
At an elevation of 900 meters, this Upper Cretaceous limestone cave, also known as “Shpella e Farricës,” is an undiscovered gem. The entrance is just 1 square meter, but after a few meters, it expands dramatically to the size of a football field. Inside, explorers find a true labyrinth, rich in stalactites and stalagmites of dazzling colors and formations.
The hike to and within the cave is intermediate level, lasting about 5–6 hours total. Headlamps are required, and visitors are advised to bring their own.
After the cave exploration, we enjoy lunch at a traditional village restaurant, followed by a short visit to Holta Canyon — famous for its warm waters, limestone formations, and narrow passages.
In the afternoon, we return to Tirana, concluding this incredible journey through one of Albania’s most untouched and awe-inspiring regions.
