Hiking to Ilyrian Irmaj Castle

Our journey begins at dawn in Tirana, where we set off at 6:00 AM toward the enchanting region of Gramsh. Along the way, we pass the serene Banja Lake, pausing for a short coffee break while soaking in the peaceful morning views.

At the summit, we’re rewarded with spectacular panoramic views — and a truly special experience: a traditional Albanian lunch, prepared by local chef Skënder and delivered to the castle on donkey-back. The meal showcases local flavors, using fresh, seasonal ingredients sourced from the village.

In the afternoon, we descend back to the village, where we connect with the locals and gain insight into traditional Albanian rural life. You’ll witness centuries-old practices such as cheese-making, fruit preservation (including compote and molasses), and the crafting of homemade raki and other spirits.

Dinner is served in another welcoming village home and features a slow-cooked goat or chicken dish, prepared in a traditional Albanian clay pot, cooked under pressure for rich, tender flavors. We end the day by spending the night in the village, hosted by local families — offering an authentic, heartwarming glimpse into the real life of this remarkable region.

ITINERARY

DAY 1: Irmaj Castle and Upper Sulova – A Step Back in Time

By 8:00 AM, we arrive in Gramsh and continue our adventure to Lubinja Village via local transport. As we travel, the road offers breathtaking panoramic views of Mount Tomorr, one of Albania’s most sacred and majestic peaks.

In Lubinja, a warm welcome awaits us with a homemade village breakfast, lovingly prepared by a local family using only fresh, homegrown products. Guests will also have the opportunity to purchase traditional goods such as artisanal cheese, fresh butter, olive oil, and fruit jams.

At 10:30 AM, we begin our moderate-level hike toward the ancient Irmaj Castle. The 13 km trail climbs approximately 500 meters, leading us through unspoiled natural landscapes. Perched above the valley, the castle remains largely untouched and unexplored, believed to date back to Illyrian times. Along the way, our knowledgeable local guide will share its rich and mysterious history.

DAY 2: Springs, Forests, and Farewell to the Mountains

After a traditional village breakfast, we begin our morning with a peaceful walk to a nearby natural water spring, known for its fresh, pure taste and believed by locals to have healing properties.

From there, we journey into the Black Forest, a mystical woodland rich in flora and legend, where the air is filled with the scent of pine and wild herbs. The trail leads us to Kalaja e Qelës (The Fortress of Qela) — another hidden historical gem that offers panoramic views and a quiet sense of awe.

In the early afternoon, we begin our return to Tirana, carrying with us the flavors, stories, and spirit of the Albanian highlands — and memories of a place where time stands still.
